Pump It Up Pro (TM) Game Interface
April 2006

Pump It Up Pro is the latest game in the Pump It Up arcade/console dance game series. One of the main design objectives was to revamp the Korean anime flavored interface used in the original series to make it palatable to an American audience. The interface was in fact one of the aspects of the original series that hurt sales in the US, and it was my team's job to create a clear, easy to understand, and attractive user interface. The design had to accommodate two screen sizes: 852 x 480, and 640 x 480, since the game was installed in multiple generations of game cabinets. Some screens contain artwork that was partly produced by other artists, mainly the unfinished Pump It Up Pro logo, the top outer frame of the gameplay screen, and the step arrows.

The design was roughed out as wireframes, mocked up in Photoshop, and then revised until the entire team of programmers and artists was happy with the look. The multi-layered Photoshop files were then given to the programmers to break into individual graphics for placement in the game. There were about about a dozen screens made, 8 of which are shown.
